UNICEF: 6,500 children displaced every day in northwestern Syria
IDLIB GOVERNATE, Syria– More than 6,500 children have been displaced every day in northwestern Syria during the past week, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said in a report on Sunday.
The organization added that the crisis in northwestern Syria is impeding efforts to protect children unprecedentedly and stated that the total number of displaced children exceeds 300,000 since the beginning of last December.
UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children are in urgent need of food, water, and medicine. The organization indicated that children pay the highest price as a result of the ongoing crisis in Syria; during the past year, 900 children were killed, more than 75% of them in the northwest. Idlib Governate recorded the highest number of dead and injured children.
UNICEF called on all parties to immediately stop fighting and to deliver the necessary humanitarian assistance to every child in need without obstacles.
