William Roebuck visits Raqqa and Tabqa Civil Councils

RAQQA, Syria – Deputy Special Envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS William Roebuck visited the civil councils administering Raqqa and Tabqa in northern Syria on Wednesday. During his trip, Roebuck stated that the U.S. understands and is familiar with the diplomatic efforts led by the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) to reach a political solution with Damascus government.

Roebuck also stated that American support for North and East Syria will continue in the interim. American support includes the anti-Islamic State partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and material support to the SDC and local councils, such as the ones administering Raqqa and Tabqa.

During the meeting, Roebuck discussed with members of the Raqqa and Tabqa councils the latest developments in the region in addition to the needs of the councils.

Roebuck also expressed his country’s concern about the Islamic State elements in North and East Syria, stressing their continued cooperation with SDF in fighting terrorism.

Leila Mustafa, Co-Chair of Raqqa Civil Council, attended the meeting. She stated that the American Ambassador promised them continued support for service projects, the security forces, and cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Mustafa also indicated that despite the U.S. forces withdrawal from the region, the U.S support is still continuing through the organizations under the supervision of some supportive countries in service projects in Raqqa.
