Siham Qiryo: Syrian parliament recognition of Sayfo and Armenian genocides “comes too late”
QAMISHLI, Syria – Ms. Siham Qiryo, official of the Syriac Women’s Union in Syria and Co-Chair of the General Council of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, commented on the recent recognition of the Sayfo and Armenian genocides by the Syrian parliament on Tursday, remarking that the move comes too late.
“The Syrian Parliamentary recognition of the Syriac massacres of the Turkish state comes too late,” said Qiryo. “It came after these difficult circumstances in which we suffer as a result of Turkish attacks on North and East Syria. We as Syriac people have suffered from Ottoman rule and the Sayfo (Armenian and Syriac-Assyrian genocide) in 1915 which claimed the lives of a million and a half Armenians and 700 thousand Syriac-Assyrians, followed by many genocides suffered by our people over the years.”
Qiryo continued, “Today, Erdogan and his factions practice forced displacement in our Syrian territory, as happened in Ras al-Ayn, Tel Abyad, Jarabulus, Al-Bab, Azaz, and Afrin, which included all the peoples of the region, including Syriacs, Armenians, Arabs, and Kurds.”
