SYRIA: Syriac Union Party’s Gabriel Chamoun elected Co-Chair of Qamishli Municipality
QAMISHLI, Syria – Syriac Union Party (SUP) official Gabriel Chamoun has been elected Co-Chair of Qamishli Municipalities’ Executive Council. In an interview with SuroyoTV, Mr. Chamoun said his nomination came after a meeting held in Qamishli where the decision was taken to unify the city’s eastern and western districts.
Gabriel Chamoun and Zuzan Ibrahim were elected Co-Chairs following elections for the Qamishli Executive Council at the meeting.
Mr. Chamoun said he wished everybody in the newly merged administration success in their work and appealed to the people of Qamishli to actively cooperate with the municipality, so that they could better provide services to its citizens.
Before taking up his current role, Gabriel Chamoun was the Co-Chair of Hasakah Province in Gozarto (Jazira) Region of North and East Syria.
The Syriac Union Party is a co-founding party of the Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA) of North and East Syria and remains a full partner in the DAA system. The SUP holds seats in all political, legislative, and representative bodies of the DAA.
The DAA consists of local, municipal, and regional civil and military councils. Despite the October 2019 invasion by Turkey of several areas administered by the DAA, the system of local cooperative government remains intact.
The SUP advocates for the model of democracy established through the DAA to be implemented as for the whole of Syria. Its goal is a democratic, decentralized, and pluralistic Syria with political, cultural, and social rights for all people and peoples of Syria.
The SUP’s military wing is the Syriac Military Council (Mawtbo Fulhoyo Suryoyo; MFS). The MFS is a co-founder of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the self-defense forces of North and East Syria. The SUP also maintains a police force, the Sutoro, which operates as a member of North and East Syria’s Internal Security Forces.
