Syriac Women’s Union in Syria celebrates International Women’s Day at Ishtarot House in Hasakah

HASAKAH, Syria — As part of the events of the week-long celebration of International Women’s Day, the Hasakah branch of the Syriac Women’s Union held an event marking the occasion at the Women’s House (Ishtarot).

The ceremony was attended by Ms. Siham Qiryo, Head of the Syriac Women’s Union in Syria, members of the Women’s Union, and women from various Syriac institutions.

The ceremony began with a minute of silence to commemorate martyrs, followed by a speech on behalf of the Young Women’s Committee delivered by Ms. Heba Assia, in which she spoke about the meaning of this historic day, why March 8th was chosen as an international day to celebrate women, and the important role played by Syrian women. Assia stated that Syrian women in general, and Syriac women in particular, have played an important role throughout the near decade of crisis in Syria. During this time, women have the defied barriers confining their roles in society and have contributed social, politically, economically, and militarily, ensuring their own rights and the rights of all Syrian women.

The event concluded with several competitions centered around women’s rights and International Women’s Day and the distribution of gifts to the attendees.
