Famed Syriac goalkeeper Joseph Chamoun succumbs to coronavirus in Sweden
SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden – Former goalkeeper for the Syrian National Football Team and Al-Jihad SC Joseph Chamoun passed away in Sweden at the age of 64 several days after being admitted to the hospital will symptoms of the novel coronavirus COVID-19.
Chamoun, born in the northeastern Syrian city of Zalin (Qamishli), was goalkeeper for Al-Jihad SC during their “golden era” in the 1970s. He went on to play for Rmelan Club, Army Club, and represented the Syrian National Team at the 1980 Asian Cup finals in 1980.
Chamoun retired from football in the mid-1980s.
The sports community in Gozarto (Jazira) Region of North and East Syria expressed great sadness for this tragedy. Chamoun, directly or indirectly, was known by many in the region.
Chamoun was scheduled to attend the upcoming Jihad Sport Club Festival.
