Syrian Democratic Forces General Commander Abdi supports Emmanuel Macron’s push for global ceasefire

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi praised French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for a world ceasefire to aid in the global fight against the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

Via his official Twitter account, Abdi said, “The International initiative led by President Emmanuel Macron to support the UN call for a global ceasefire so that the world can focus on the epidemic of new coronavirus, and it’s a good step and a humanitarian that requires all forces to support it to save the world and build a better future.”

Macron had earlier said he had secured the approval of three of the five permanent members of U.N. Security Council for a worldwide ceasefire so that the international community could focus on confronting the coronavirus pandemic.

Macron said the Chinese, U.S., and U.K. have all assured him of their support for a worldwide ceasefire, adding that he hopes to get the Russian president’s approval as well.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres called for a global truce on 23 March, citing the collapse of health systems in war-torn countries and the targeting of remaining medical staff and infrastructure in combat operations.
