U.S. Embassy in Syria announces U.S. COVID-19 aid to Syria

WASHINGTON – The U.S. government, setting aside its strained political relations with Syria, provided $31 million in aid to help bolster the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, exempted from U.S. and U.N. sanctions.

The U.S. Embassy in Syria announced via Facebook that U.S. humanitarian aid will be provided to Syria to combat the coronavirus, including medicines and medical supplies, exempted from any U.S. or U.N. sanctions currently imposed on the country.

The U.S. Embassy statement explained that $31 million in aid will be distributed to support an awareness campaign, fund disease surveillance and public cleaning programs, and provide water and sanitation supplies.

Activists argue that such aid does not necessarily mean that the U.S. will refrain from the implementation of the Caesar Law, which would put more pressure on the Syrian regime in pursuit of a political solution in the war-torn country.
