SYRIA: Unknown aircraft target Iranian militia in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria – Iranian militias in Syria have, once again, been targeted at the Maizilah Base east of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria by unknown aircraft, reportedly one or more drones, killing several militia members and destroying military equipment.

Iranian forces and militias within Syrian territory have been repeatedly targeted by unknown parties. The most recent attack was conducted by an unidentified aircraft on Saturday midnight. The attack resulted in the killing of 12 Iranians stationed at the Maizilah Base in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, in addition to damaging several pieces of military equipment, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

According to some sources, it is likely that these attacks were carried out by Israeli aircraft, as locations of the Syrian regime forces and affiliated Iranian militias have been bombed in the areas of Al-Kouria, Al-Salihiya, and Al-Mayadeen in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, leading to deaths 14 Iranians and wounding a number of others.

Previously, the Israeli Ministry of Defense had announced its intention to remove the Iranian presence from the Syrian military arena before the end of 2020 through the intensification of its bombing campaign targeting Iranian forces and their affiliated militias.
