Syrian National Assembly announces it is joining the Syrian Democratic Council
VIENNA – The Syrian National Assembly announced that it is joining the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) during a press conference on Wednesday evening in Vienna, stressing that the decision to join is a confirmation of the unity of Syrian people.
The press conference, attended by Co-Chair of the Syrian Democratic Council Riyad Darar and the President of the Syrian National Assembly, Mohammed Bermo, as well as a number of political parties, personalities, and the media.
Amir Zaidan, Deputy President of Syrian National Assembly, announced the decision to join the SDC in a statement read to the audience.
In his statement, Zaidan said that the decision to join the SDC is the culmination of a series of recent agreements and meetings aimed at ensuring the political transition from a system of tyranny and dictatorship to a democratic system shared by all Syrians with equal rights and duties.
A number of principles and objectives were also agreed upon, said Zaidan, that are the basis for joint action.
The Assembly’s statement concluded by emphasizing that its decision to join the SDC is an affirmation of the unity of Syrian people, the importance of the Eastern Euphrates region as an integral part of the Syrian homeland, and that the political process must unite the national political forces in this region.
Darar stated that the Assembly’s decision is proof that Syrians can unite their positions and orientations to achieve the unification of democratic forces.
He also confirmed that the SDC is preparing for an all-encompassing conference of the democratic opposition forces following a series of dialogue workshops held in Europe.
The Syrian National Assembly was founded in 2014 and emerged from the ‘Working Group of Cordoba’. The Assembly comprises several political figures from different regions and components of Syria. It recently participated in a series of dialogue workshops organized by the SDC.
