LEBANON: Lebanese leader rebukes Hezbollah’s ongoing political and military support for Syria
BEIRUT, Lebanon – Samir Geagea, leader of the Lebanese Forces Party, expressed his discontent with statements made by Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah. In a recent statement Hassan Nasrallah affirmed his continued political and military support for the Syrian Baath Regime, statements done in light of the implementation this week of the U.S. Caesar Law against individuals of the Syrian Regime.
Nasrallah’s statements raised anger and fears among many Lebanese politicians, including Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea. Geagae said in press statements that Hezbollah’s stance toward “Arab friends” threatens cutting off of a vital artery helping Lebanon at time of crisis. He said Hezbollah is well aware Lebanon is weighed down by the ongoing crisis and that the Lebanese must save themselves, before they save others. As the new sanctions will have a negative impact on Lebanon he called on the Lebanese government to resolve its problems first before interfering with other countries’ problems and affairs.
Geagea further pointed out that Lebanese Government must prioritize the interests of its people, and Syria should solve its own problems. Lebanon today can not tolerate adventures for the benefit of outside parties, and the most important thing for the Government is to stop the smuggling of US Dollars to Syria. If not Lebanon might potentially become a candidate under Caesar law.
