Fundraising Fire Extinguishers distributed over Syriac villages and monasteries in southeastern Turkey

MIDYAT / TUR ABDIN, Turkey – After a joint fundraising in June by six Syriac organizations to raise money for fire extinguishers for Syriac villages and monasteries, this Sunday the fire extinguishers arrived in Midyat and were distributed over different villages and monasteries in the Tur Abdin Region of Beth Nahrin – Mesopotamia.

The fire extinguishers are much-needed as every summer Tur Abdin is plagued by fires devouring Syriac farmland, orchards and vineyards costing the Syriacs (part of) their livelihoods.

The fire extinguishers were distributed to representatives of the Syriac villages at a meeting held in the community center of the Federation of Syriac Associations in Turkey (SÜDEF / Süryani Dernekler Federasyonu.). Spokesman Israel Demir expressed his gratefulness to the generous Syriac diaspora and the organizations that participated in the fundraising. He also said that the left over money from the fundraising will be used to buy fireproof clothes and supplies.
