German Chancellor Angela Merkel: Russia pivotal in worsening the Syrian tragedy

BERLIN — During her traditional summer press conference in Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the situation in Syria as a great tragedy, indicating that the Russian support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has contributed in continuing the humanitarian catastrophe in the country.

“It is a great tragedy, in which the hopes of what was once called the Arab Spring have turned into their opposite,” Merkel stated, noting that half of the population of Syria are fleeing the country.

“Russia did not hesitate to help Syrian President Bashar al-Assad,” Merkel continued, noting that the Russian support for the Assad regime has made the situation in Syria much worse.

Merkel also confirmed that, throughout her tenure, she will ensure that the voices of the displaced people and refugees inside and outside Syria, be heard.
