IRAQ: Delegation from Salahaddin University Syriac Language Department meets with National Union Coalition in Kurdistan Regional Parliament

ANKAWA, Iraq — A delegation from the Syriac Language Department at Salahaddin University – Erbil met with a delegation from the National Union Coalition in the Kurdistan Region Parliament to discuss the situation of Syriac education in the region and the problems it faces.

The National Unity Coalition delegation consisted of the president and several members while the Syriac Language Department at Salahaddin University was represented by the departmental president, the general director of the department, and several professors.

During the meeting, the group discussed progress in the field of Syriac education at the university and the wider region. Issues facing Syriac language education were highlighted, such as the severe shortage of educational staff.

The National Union Coalition in parliament has shown full readiness to support Syriac education in the region and to communicate with the relevant authorities to solve all the problems and obstacles that hinder its advancement.

The meeting concluded with the two sides agreeing to hold further meetings in address the obstacles facing comprehensive Syriac education.

In Iraq Arabic and Kurdish are the two official languages. Syriac is a recognized language and can be taught at schools in areas where there is a larger Chaldean-Syriac-Assyrian presence.
