Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria celebrates 15th anniversary of founding

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — On the 15th anniversary of its founding, the Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria released the following statement:

********** PRESS STATEMENT **********

On October 1st, 2005, the official announcement of the establishment of the Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria began a new phase in the struggle for freedom, democracy, and justice for all Syrian people. Our party joins the efforts of all democratic forces in Syria to bring about the positive change required, reach a modern democratic state represented by all Syrian components, and highlight the issue of the Syriac–Assyrian people and ensure their legitimate rights. Since the founding of the Syrian state, the Syriac–Assyrian people have been marginalization and denied their identities which led to large-scale emigration.

The current situation in Syria shows that the countries involved are not seeking, and are not interested in finding, a political solution but are seeking to exploit it for their own benefit, especially regional countries such as Turkey and Iran, who are pursuing expansionist and sectarian projects that have caused wide-spread displacement and demographic change.

The designs of regional and international powers have damaged Syrian society and further fragmented its people. The Syrian regime has failed to facilitate the efforts of the United Nations to end the conflict and achieve a lasting political settlement in accordance with U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254.

In this regard, we emphasize the need for all concerned parties, especially the U.S. and Russia, to pursue a political solution with a review by the United Nations of the mechanisms that have been put in place for this process. The exclusion of key forces in the negotiations, namely the Syrian Democratic Council and the Autonomous Administration of the North and East Syria, complicates any future political settlement.

Drawing up a roadmap for the solution and the development of a new constitution for Syria and preparing for democratic elections, the desired political transition will be achieved.

It is necessary to intensify our efforts for all political and civil forces of the Syriac–Assyrian people to guarantee our rights. We, as a party, have always sought to strengthen the relationship with all Syriac–Assyrian parties. The Syriac–Assyrian people have long suffered and fought and sacrificed their lives for the sake of achieving a free and dignified life. We seek an existence together with all other Syrian components — Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen and others — of justice and equality of rights within a democratic, pluralistic, secular, and decentralized state.

With the passage of the 15th anniversary of the founding of the Syriac Union Party (SUP), we offer warm congratulations to all the members of the Party and to our people, who have not been spared the effort, struggle, sacrifice, and special congratulations to all the families of our martyrs. We assure them that the sacrifices of their children will bear fruit of a better reality and brighter future as we continue our promise and follow in the footsteps of our martyrs until we reach our goals.
