Trump announces withdrawal of more U.S. troops from Afghanistan
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In keeping with his promises to withdraw U.S. troops from overseas, U.S. President Donald Trump announced via tweet on Wednesday that the majority of U.S. forces remaining in Afghanistan must return home before 25 December.
“We should have the small remaining number of our BRAVE Men and Women serving in Afghanistan home by Christmas!” Trump wrote.
Trump’s remarks come as confirmation of his national security adviser Robert C. O’Brien’s earlier statement the United States would reduce the number of active troops in Afghanistan to just 2,500 by the beginning of 2021.
Since July, Washington has slowly drawn down the number of its active military forces in Afghanistan to 4,000.
