Locals protest Russian Military Police patrol outside Dayrik in North and East Syria

DAYRIK (AL-MALIKIYAH), Syria — Dozens of residents of the village of Ein Dewar in the Dayrik (Al-Malikiyah) countryside protested against the attempt of Russian forces to establish a new military base in the village, demanding to Russian officers that their forces leave the village.

On Sunday morning, Russian Military Police forces conducted a military patrol consisting of 11 military armored vehicles, accompanied by two military helicopters, along the Syrian–Turkish border near Dayrik. The Russian forces were stationed at one of the Syrian regime positions in the village of Ein Dewar, in the northern countryside of Dayrik.

Russian forces have tried on multiple occasions to expand their presence in the North and East Syria. Sunday’s attempt was the fifth time Russian forces have tried to establish positions near Dayrik amid protests by locals who object to their presence.
