NORTH AND EAST SYRIA: Armenian community in Zalin (Qamishli) shows solidarity with Nagorno-Karabakh

ZALIN (QAMISHLI), Syria -The Armenian community in Zalin (Qamishli) on Friday organized a march in solidarity with the inhabitants of Armenian-majority Artaskh or Nagorno-Karabakh region and in condemnation of the Turkish-backed Azerbaijani attack. The Armenian activists carried Armenian flags and placards calling for the recognition of Artsakh by the international community (“Artsakh is an independent region and Armenia wants peace.”).

They also held up banners with condemnations of the Turkish role and intervention. Several press reports and heads of state have indicated that Turkey is providing military support to Azerbaijan and has sent Syrian mercenaries from the militant factions it financially, logistically, and militarily backs in Syria to fight against the Armenian forces. Several of the Turkish-backed militias espouse Islamist ideologies.

Artaskh is disputed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and hostilities have been on and off for the last 30 years. Since late September, Artsakh has witnessed a military escalation between the two countries. The hostilities have led to hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands.
