LEBANON: Universal Syriac Union Party participates in activist protest in Zahlé demanding full implementation of UN Resolution 1559

ZAHLÉ, Lebanon – Several activist groups, youth and political parties, including the Universal Syriac Union Party, staged a protest on Sunday in front of the municipality in the city of Zahlé to demand the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1559 demanding the surrender and dismantling of all weapons of all militias, in particular to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah or “Party of God”, the end of the Iranian occupation of Lebanon, and the restoration of full sovereignty.

The protesters read a joint statement to the media in which they stated Hezbollah to be the main reason for the collapse of Lebanon’s sovereignty. The statement said Hezbollah was a puppet militia that falsely claims to be a defendant of Lebanon and is nothing more than a proxy for Iranian occupation. The statement further claimed that Hezbollah’s storing of weapons, bombs, and missiles over many Lebanese cities, also in civilian areas, every day exposes and threatens an entire population. The Lebanese people are made human shields for something that is not their cause, they said.

After the protest, the activists held a meeting at the headquarters of the Universal Syriac Union Party in Zahlé in which they discussed and drew up a road map for future protests and actions. The activists emphasized that the struggle to achieve freedom and full sovereignty will continue regardless of the great difficulties they face.
