ZALIN, Syria — In an interview with SuroyoTV, Co-Chair of the Syriac Union Party (SUP) Sanharib Barsoum indicated that the visit of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) delegation to North and East Syria was an important step in spreading knowledge about the region’s focus on religious freedom.
Barsoum indicated that the SUP met with the delegation, headed by USCIRF Vice Chair Nadine Maenza, and presented detailed explanations about Christian Syriac people (Chaldeans–Arameans–Assyrians) in North and East Syria, the obstacles they face, and ways to achieve stability and their survival in the region.
Barsoum noted that the delegation promised to provide support for the Christian Syriac people and the Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA) that ensure the religious freedom to all the peoples of North and East Syria.
Syriac Cultural Association official Amal Gawriye indicated that the USCIRF visit was also important because it acquainted the delegation members with the culture and history of the Syriac people (Chaldeans-Arameans–Assyrians).
“We must find ways that keep our people rooted to their historical homeland,” she stated.
