IRAQ: Smugglers in possession of antique Syriac manuscripts and seals arrested in Nineveh Province
NINEVEH PLAINS, Iraq — On Wednesday, the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior announced that an antiquities smuggling operation based in Nineveh Province has been broken up. The smuggling operation was reportedly in possession of antique Syriac manuscripts and antique seals. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the smugglers were arrested.
“The Ministry of the Interior managed to thwart an antiquities smuggling operation in Nineveh Province and the smuggling gang has been arrested,” said a Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement.
“The antiquities included antique Syriac manuscripts, in addition to antique coins and seals,” the statement continued. “Necessary measures had been taken against the gang and antiquities in their possession have been confiscated in accordance with the law.”
