SYRIA: Planning of restoration of Arch of Triumph in Tadmorto (Palmyra) underway
DARAMSUQ / TADMORTO, Syria — The General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums of Syria announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Association of the Russian Stone Industry seeking the assistance of their experts and specialists to restore the Arch of Triumph in Tadmorto (Palmyra). The Arch was destroyed by the Islamic State (ISIS) in October 2015.
According to the Syrian regime’s SANA news agency, the memorandum of understanding signed by the Assistant Director of Antiquities and Museums, Nazeer Awad, and head of the Association of the Russian Stone Industry, Dmitriy Mediyantsev, outlines cooperation between the two sides in all aspects related to the restoration of the Arch.
The memorandum also provides for the completion of archaeological studies and necessary documentation work before restoration work can begin in accordance with global technical and archaeological standards.
