Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II receives Austrian Ambassador to Syria Hans Peter Glanzer in Daramsuq

DARAMSUQ — On Sunday, Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II received Austrian Ambassador to Syria Hans Peter Glanzer at the Monastery of Mor Aphrem in Ma’at Sednaya in the countryside of Daramsuq (Damascus).

The meeting was also attended by Patriarchal Vicar for Monks Affairs Archbishop Mor Yacoub Babawi and Patriarchal Secretary and Media Office Director Raban Joseph Bali.

During the meeting, the Patriarch extended his condolences to Ambassador Glanzer for the victims of last week’s terrorist attacks in the Austrian capital of Vienna and hoped that terrorism would be eliminated around the world.

The Ambassador was given a tour of the monastery led by Archbishop Babawi before visiting the Sayfo Martyrs’ Altar and the Monument to the Centenary of the Sayfo.

The Sayfo was the genocide against the Syriac people beginning in 1915 perpetrated by the Ottomans and allied Kurdish tribes. The Sayfo, literally “sword” in Syriac, occurred concurrently with the Ottoman genocides targeting Armenians and Pontic Greeks.
