Beth Nahrin National Council: We have little faith in Constitutional Committee to reach a solution in Syria

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA / NEW YORK — Spokesperson for Beth Nahrin National Council (Mawthbo Umthonoyo D’ Beth Nahrin, MUB) Hannibal Yacoub stated to SyriacPress that the MUB have little faith in the Syrian Constitutional Committee Small Body to reach a solution for Syria.

The failure to include the Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA) of North and East Syria, which governs a significant percent of the country territorially and demographically with the work program of the Constitutional Committee is a clear indication that the members of the Committee have no real interest in a democratic solution for Syria, said Yacoub.

During a U.N. Security Council session on Wednesday, Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria Khawla Matar informed the Council that the fourth round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee Small Body would be held between 30 November and 4 December. The fifth round is scheduled for January 2021.

“We all know that the Constitutional Committee has not yet achieved what we aspired to,” Matar said. “The commitment of the Syrian parties to the meetings and the agreed agenda is an important opportunity for the committee members to positively move forward in the political process.”

During a recent video conference with officials from the DAA and the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) of North and East Syria, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said that Sweden was working on their inclusion in the constitutional talks taking place in Geneva.
