QABRE HEWORE, Syria – Official of the Syriac Union Party (SUP), Qabre Hewore branch, Habib Ardish announced to the SyriacPress news desk that their official request to erect a memorial for the martyr’s of the Sayfo Genocide of 1915 has been approved by the municipality. Now that there is official approval, the SUP’s Qabre Hewore branch will start the process to designate a location and erect the memorial in 2021.

Habib Ardish stressed that the Sayfo Genocide is still a much unrecognized and painful memory for the Syriac people (Chaldeans-Arameans-Assyrians) which will never be forgotten. “All of us must demand that Turkey recognize the Sayfo Genocide,” Ardish said.

On 15 June of this year, on Sayfo Genocide Remembrance Day, Syriacs in Qabre Hewore  (al-Qahtaniyah) and Zalin (Qamishli) held candlelight marches to mark the 105th anniversary of Sayfo Genocide. In the Gozarto (Jezira) Region in North and East Syria one will find many villages and cities established by Sayfo survivors deported or forced south by the Ottomans Turks and Kurds who perpetrated the Sayfo Genocide of 1915. Zalin is such a city established by Syriac Sayfo survivors.
