U.S. Ambassador Kelly Craft: U.N. must redouble efforts to achieve political solution in Syria

NEW YORK — U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft confirmed the U.S.’s support for the Syrian people in their legitimate aspirations for an immediate and just end to the Syrian conflict.

In comments made during the U.N. Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Craft stated that, “The solution in Syria is not military action, and the only way to achieve peace and stability is for the Syrian regime to support the political road map stipulated in the UNSC Resolution 2254.”

The U.S. will also continue to impose sanctions on the Syrian regime until it engages in a political solution, according to Craft.

The U.N and the Security Council must redouble their efforts to make progress on the Syrian issue and press for the immediate release of people arbitrarily detained by the regime, she continued.

Craft concluded by stating that the Syrian people need to see the political process facilitated by the United Nations achieve tangible results for the implementation of the UNSC Resolution 2254, without which, millions of Syrian refugees and displaced persons will not return to Syria.
