Anwar Muslim: Coexistence and peace between the peoples of North and East Syria is a threat to Turkey
NORHT AND EAST SYRIA — Co-Chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) Anwar Muslim told SyriacPress that since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, Turkey has attacked the people of North and East Syria in an effort to put an end to region’s project to build a multi-ethnic and multi-religious democratic society.
Over the past few years, said Muslim, Turkey and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) have occupied many areas, such as Cafrin (Afrin), Tel Abyad, and Rish Ayno (Ras al-Ayn), that were symbols of peaceful and democratic coexistence, concepts not commensurate with Turkey’s goals in the region.
The continuous Turkish attacks are aimed at occupying more territory and imposing a political agenda that benefits Turkey, not the people of the region, he continued. The transition between U.S. administrations has reinvigorated Turkey’s push.
Muslim also pointed out that Turkey continues to violate the ceasefire agreements it has signed with both the U.S. and Russia. However, those countries, especially Russia, remain silent about the Turkish violations and are equally responsible for not ensuring peace.
Muslim concluded by stating the fear among civilians in North and East Syria of repeated massacres by Turkey, especially the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) and Kurdish peoples and called on all people of the region to join hands with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in defense of the region.
