BEIRUT — In comments made to Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Qabas, the head of the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt stated that, “The theory of a strong president is the biggest disaster for Lebanon and Christians,” remarking on the failure of the French initiative.
“Whoever bears the responsibility is we at home, because we cannot decide to form a government,” Jumblatt added.
“What can we hope for after a French or non-French initiative if we fail to form a government? I join the voice of Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Ra’i who has repeatedly called on President Michel Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Sheikh Saad Hariri to return to dialogue.”
In response to a question about the loss of status of Lebanese universities, hospitals, banks, and tourist centers in the Middle East, Jumblatt replied:
“We are in a race against time, the longer we delay in forming a government and in unifying a Lebanese vision to preserve old Lebanon, we have re-entered to use as a rocket base for the Islamic Republic of Iran, whose cultural and political vision is different from our son as Lebanese, and there is a part of the Lebanese who have their project, and I do not know what they understand about big Lebanon.”
