1,800,000 Iraqi citizens of Nineveh Plains live below the poverty line

NINEVEH PLAINS, Iraq — Iraqi President Barham Salih received head of the Sabean-Mandaean community, Sheikh Sattar Jabbar Hilo, at Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad on Monday. Salih stressed that the cultural diversity of Iraq must be protected from violent attempts to undermine coexistence and stoke sectarian strife.

Iraqi news outlet Shafak stated that Salih stressed the need to consolidate the rule of law and protect the security of citizens. Recent terrorist attacks, said Salih, seek to destabilize peaceful coexistence. He also stressed the need to continue the war on terrorism and quickly deal with anyone trying to stir up sectarian hatred.

In related news, Director of Statistics in Nineveh Nawfal Sulaiman revealed that the population living below the poverty line in the governorate had risen to 38% in 2020 from 23% in 2019.

He expressed his concern that approximately 1,800,000 citizens live below the poverty line in Nineveh Governorate.

Sulaiman called on the Iraqi Government to find solutions that prevent inflation or any resulting financial problems. Otherwise, catastrophic numbers will appear, which will have negative results in various aspects.
