Living conditions deteriorating in Turkey due to economic crisis

ANKARA — Turkish media and social media revealed the state of poverty and hunger spreading in several cities across Turkey.

At the beginning of 2021, Turkey witnessed a marked rise in the price of food commodities, constituting a major obstacle for citizens in securing basic needs. The price of a loaf of bread increased by 33% due to the high price of flour. Residents of Istanbul queued for hours in order to buy bread at lower price.

A video of a citizen in Bingöl’s Yeni District looking in the garbage for food to eat circulated around social media on Tuesday.

Other video footage from Adana showed citizens collecting rotten fruits and vegetables dumped after markets closed.
