IRAQ: Dozens killed and wounded in Nasiriyah protests, rumors that Prime Minister Kadhimi dismisses governor and deputies of province

NASIRIYAH, Iraq — As protests in the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar Province continue to escalate, medical sources reported several deaths on Friday, bring the death toll among the demonstrators into the dozens. The number of wounded is now over 130.

Two protesters were in serious condition, said the sources, and were taken to Al-Amal Hospital for surgery.

Some sources reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi dismissed Dhi Qar Governor Nazim Waili and deputies Hazem Kanani and Abazer Omar from their posts.

It could not be confirmed if Kadhimi did in fact dismiss the officials.
