Syriac Writers Union in Iraq sends a letter to His Holiness Pope Francis
BAGHDAD — The Syriac Writers Union in Iraq sent an open letter to His Holiness Pope Francis on the occasion of his visit to Iraq.
“Your historic visit comes at a time when the Iraqi people, with all its components, are going through a critical and dangerous historical stage, including the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian Christian component, which has been suffering, especially after the fierce attack of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Mosul and its devastating effects, including mass displacement,” the letter read.
The letter referred to the suffering of minorities in Iraq, including the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people, which have been subjected to unfair and unjust laws, such as the national card law, confiscation of communal in individual property, and interference with dutifully and legally elected political representatives.
The letter concluded with a statement of the Union’s hope that the Pope’s visit will contribute to strengthening the spirit of Christians and other minorities in Iraq and spread brotherhood, tolerance, and dialogue among the peoples of the region.
