NORTH AND EAST SYRIA: Statue of Mesopotamian goddess of music ORNINA adorns new roundabout in Zalin (Qamishli)

ZALIN (QAMISHLI) – Several months after construction work started on the foundations of the Ornina Roundabout in the western quarter of the city of Zalin, the statue of the ancient goddess of music Ornina was placed on Saturday on top of the fountain in the middle of the roundabout.

Now that the statue of Ornina has been installed, it is expected that the roundabout will be officially inaugurated in April, bringing an original Syriac and Mesopotamian aesthetic touch to the neighborhood and the city as a whole.

The Ornina Roundabout is a collaboration of Syriac institutions operating in Zalin and the Gozarto (Jazira) Region. The artistic project was made possible by the artistic input and financial help of Dr. Abrohom Lahdo who donated a sum of money to the project in memory of his deceased wife. Dr. Lahdo was born and raised in Zalin (Qamishli) and resides in Germany.

The Ornina Roundabout has in its center two water lakes with in the middle the statue of Ornina, the ancient goddess of music and art in Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) and Syria.

This Ornina roundabout is considered an important artistic project representing an authentic Syriac national and Mesopotamian symbol.
