Delegation from Beth Nahrin National Council institutions participates in Newroz celebrations in North and East Syria

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — A delegation from institutions of the Beth Nahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) participated in the Newroz celebrations that were held in Hasakah, Zalin (Qamishli), and Qabre Hewore (Al-Qahtaniyah) in North and East Syria on Sunday.

During the celebration in Zalin, a speech was delivered by the Syriac Cultural Association Administrator Hanna Soumi. He talked about the meanings of the Newroz and Akitu festivals, referring to the renewal of nature and the beginning of spring in these holidays. Soumi also spoke about the spirit of coexistence and brotherhood of peoples that characterize the diversity North and East Syria.

A delegation from the U.S.-led International Coalition headed by the new U.S. Deputy Envoy to Syria David Brownstein participated in the Newroz celebration in Hasakah. Deputy Envoy Brownstein light a ceremonial fire, integral to the celebration of the holiday, alongside General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi.

Newroz is celebrated by the Kurdish people of North and East Syria on 21 March every year. To celebrate the coming of Spring, they wear traditional costume, light fires, and engage in folkloric dances.
