Respected Syriac educator Shamiram Shamoun passes away in Zalin from coronavirus
ZALIN, Syria — On Tuesday evening, the people of North and East Syria, especially the Syriac (Aramean–Chaldean–Assyrian) people, received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of the distinguished Syriac teacher and intellectual Shamiram Shamoun in the city of Zalin (Qamishli).
Shamoun passed away after contracting the coronavirus. She passed away a week after her husband Abdul Karim Gawriye.
Shamoun was known for her modesty and her love of Syriac history, heritage, and music. Shamoun, nicknamed “The Dame of Syriac Rhetoric” left a great legacy in the field of Syriac education and song.
She taught generations of intellectuals and innovators about Syriac heritage with a passion. She also contributed to the consolidation of the Syriac language and ecclesiastical melodies.
