Russia and U.S. exchange data on the number of missiles and nuclear warheads in-line with extension of New START treaty

WASHINGTON, D.C. / MOSCOW — For the first time since Russia and the United States extended the New START treaty, the two countries have exchanged data on the number of missiles and nuclear warheads in their arsenals.

Under the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), signed in 2010 and extended in 2021 until 2026, each side must reduce its nuclear arsenal to no more than 700 deployed missiles and bombers, 1,550 deployed warheads, and 800 deployed and non-deployed launchers.

On 29 January 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law ratifying the five-year New START extension.

Russia and the U.S. share data on the status of strategic forces every six months, the last exchange taking place on 1 September 2020.
