Rebuilding the Nineveh Plains: Syriac Hamdaniya District Mayor Issam Matti oversees completion of road work with Mosul-Erbil junction

BAGHDEDE, Nineveh Plains – Syriac Mayor of Hamdaniya district Issam Behnam Matti supervised the completion of the 7 km road connecting the center of his district to the Mosul-Erbil main road. Works on the connecting road included the installation of 195 lampposts, the marking of the roadways, and the placing of traffic signs. The works came about with support of and funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and was done in a joint coordination of the office of the Governor of Nineveh and the office of the Mayor of the Hamdaniya District.

Syriac Mayor of Hamdaniya District Issam Behnam Matti directly supervised the implementation of the project. Because of the lack of lightning in the night, traffic accidents claimed the lives of many people.

The Hamdaniya Districts has its center in the Syriac town of Baghdede which was overrun by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and liberated in 2016 from the hands of the terrorist organization. Its 50 thousand Suraye (Syriac) residents fled the advance of the ISIS terrorists on the town in 2014, and only 25-30 thousand have returned after the liberation of Baghdede.
