Syrian arrested in Austria on vandalism and terrorism charges after spray painting monument

VIENNA — Austrian police arrested a 28-year-old Syrian man in Steyermark County after he had spray painted “Allah Akbar” on monuments and the walls of the local parliament headquarter.

The man, known to the Austrian security authorities for previous drug possession, admitted that he wrote the phrases for reasons related to his religious convictions.

The young man was placed in a pretrial detention and charged with membership in a terrorist group.
