Syrian Women’s Council holds lecture on suicide and suicide prevention in Qabre Hewore (Al-Qahtaniyah) in North and East Syria

QABRE HEWORE, Syria — With the aim of educating women about the issue of suicide and its negative consequences on the individual and society, the Syrian Women’s Council held an awareness lecture for women in the town of Qabre Hewore (Al-Qahtaniyah). The lecture covered the causes and motives of suicide, as well as its negative repercussions on society and ways to address the problem.

The lecture was delivered by Deputy General Coordinator of the Syrian Women’s Council (SWC) and member of the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) Yeghnig Garbo and SWC member Hanan Sheikhmus.

During the lecture, Garbo explained the causes and motives of suicide, the most prominent of which was the psychological, economic, and social hardship induced by the ten-year-long war in Syria, in addition to the resulting, as well as pressures.

In order to limit the spread of this phenomenon in society, Garbo pointed to the need to maintain social contact with people who suffer from psychological problems and stress and intervene on their behalf when necessary. Garbo also touched on the need to raise awareness about the links between domestic violence, unemployment, and suicide.
