Preparations continue for Sayfo Genocide remembrance in North and East Syria

ZALIN, Syria — To commemorate the 106th anniversary of the Sayfo Genocide, the Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria is preparing a memorial evening on Tuesday, 15 June, entitled ‘The Cry of the Authentic People they Exterminated’ at the Syriac Cultural Association square in Zalin (Qamishli) in North and East Syria.

The event will feature speeches commemorating the 300,000 Syriacs (Arameans–Assyrians–Chaldeans) massacred by Ottoman forces and their Kurdish and Arab allies and a candle lit procession from the Association Square to the Sayfo Martyrs’ Roundabout.

In Hasakah, the Progressive Syriac Youth Union will hold a cultural event entitled ‘Sayfo in the Memory of Youth’ at the Syriac Cultural Association headquarters in the Nasera neighborhood.

In the town of Qabre Hewore (Al-Qahtaniyah), prayers will be held for the martyrs of the Sayfo at the Syriac Orthodox Church of Our Lady following a memorial event organized at the headquarters of the local branch of the Syriac Union Party. The memorial event will include the screening of a documentary about the Genocide.
