Sabah Shabo: Those responsible for the murder of Aida al-Hamoudi must be brought to justice

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — After widespread anger over the murder of Aida al-Hamoudi, a girl from the city of Hasakah in North and East Syria, by her family, including her father and brother among others, over her refusal to marry a cousin, SuroyoTV interviewed member of the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) in Zalin (Qamishli) and deputy in the Women’s Authority in Gozarto (Jazira) Region Sabah Shabo.

Shabo emphasized that both organizations do not accept such “honor” crimes. A crime remains a crime regardless of the motivation, said Shabo, adding that crimes against women remain a significant problem in the region.

She called on all women, women’s organizations, and the Women’s Authority to rise up and ensure those responsible for such heinous crimes are held accountable.

Shabo clarified that the patriarchal and tribal systems which al-Hamoudi was born into lead directly to her murder. Such systems are in direct conflict with the rights of women and must be replaced with systems based on egalitarianism and equality.

She demanded justice for the young girl and the imposition of the most severe penalties against the criminals. A statement on this crime was submitted and read by the Court of Justice and presented to a public prosecutor to claim the right of the victim to justice.
