Political Analyst Mehdi Afifi: Recognition of North and East Syria is unlikely in the short-term but not impossible in the future

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Political analyst and Democratic Party activist Mehdi al-Afifi said that recognition of the Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA) of North and East Syria by Washington at this point is difficult and may cause confusion in several countries and remains unlikely in the short-term. However, said al-Afifi, recognition is still possible in the mid- to long-term.

Al-Afifi stated that the DAA model, despite attempts by some to distort it, is a model for all of Syria. He praised the recent campaign launched by activists on social media calling for international recognition of the DAA but pointed out that political recognition is more difficult and complex than some believe.

Al-Afifi also pointed out that given the implicit European recognition of the DAA and apparent U.S. support for the DAA, official recognition by Europe and America is not immediately pivotal.
