Qatar accused of supporting extremist groups around the world
DOHA — During the past years, Qatar has provided financial support to various armed groups around the world, drawing the attention of international intelligence services, especially Israel, which issued a report accusing Qatar of financing terrorist groups, including the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
According to the Israeli media, the U.S. State Department has opened an investigation into the Israeli report.
Voice of America also reported that Qatar is facing accusations of financing a wide range of countries and terrorist movements, including Lebanese Hezbollah and the Islamic State (ISIS).
A diplomatic source confirmed that outgoing Israeli President Reuven Rivlin conveyed the report to U.S. President Joe Biden during their meeting at the White House. The source indicated that the information disturbed the U.S. officials in the meeting.
Washington has recently closed large military bases in Qatar and transferred its equipment to Jordan.
The Biden Administration is facing an increasingly thorny issue in Qatar which — in addition to the latest accusations — has financed extremist groups in Syria and Afghanistan, often in coordination with Turkey.
