Syrian regime’s intelligence services and Turkish-backed Ahrar al-Sharqiya added to U.S. sanctions list

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As part of its counter-terrorism measures in Syria, the U.S. Treasury announced sanctions on eight individuals and ten entities.

The sanctions included branches of the General and Military Intelligence of the Syrian regime, the Turkish-backed group Ahrar al-Sharqiya and its leader Ahmed Ihsan Fayyad al-Hayes, nicknamed Abu Hatem Chakra, who was responsible for the assassination of the Secretary-General of the Future Syria Party, Hevrin Khalaf.

Ahrar al-Sharqiya is considered one of the most criminal factions in the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) and is responsible for numerous murders, kidnappings, and extortions.
