Village roads in Tur Izlo renewed and asphalted

TUR ABDIN, Turkey – Some of the roads in Syriac villages in Tur Abdin have been renewed and asphalted. It concerns village and access roads in Arbo, Ehwo, and Beth Debe (Badibe) in the pre-dominantly Syriac region Tur Izlo of Tur Abdin.

According to a resident who returned from the diaspora to resettle in his Syriac home village, “there is hope that all roads to and from the Syriac villages will be paved.”

The asphalt roads in Tur Izlo were built in the 2000s after there had been a movement to return to Tur Abdin among Syriacs in the large diaspora.

Overdue maintenance in recent years, however, made the roads of the villages of Arkah, Arbo, Badibe, and Ehwo difficult to drive on. After an official request submitted to the municipality of Merde (Mardin), the roads are now being renewed. The renewal of the road from Arkah to Arbo is finished.
