Arab League forms committee to monitor Turkish interference in affairs of Arab countries

CAIRO — The Arab League held a meeting of foreign ministers on Friday to discuss recent developments in the region. At the end of the meeting, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Hossam Zaki announced in the meeting’s final statement that a committee was formed on Turkish interference in the affairs of Arab countries.

Zaki indicated that the first meetings of the committee were held under the chairmanship of Egypt and the membership of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Iraq, Syria, and Bahrain, in addition to the Secretary-General of the Arab League.

He added that the concerned committee drafted a resolution, approved by the Arab foreign ministers, condemning Turkish interference in Arab affairs and sovereignty, particularly in Iraq, Syria, and Libya.

He stressed that Turkish violations of the water rights of Syria and Iraq were unacceptable and called on Turkey to fulfil its legal and humanitarian obligations an increase the flow of water to both countries.

Zaki stressed the importance of taking a unified Arab stance in the face of any Turkish interference and emphasized solidarity with Arab countries whose sovereignty is being violated by Turkey.

These drafted resolutions were met with reservation by some countries, including Qatar, Libya, and Algeria.
