Argentina: Syriac Maronite Cathedral desecrated
BUENOS AIRES – On September 24, 2021, Argentina’s Syriac Maronite Cathedral was attacked by as yet unknown vandalists who violated the church and desecrated the Holy Eucharist.
In a communiqué, the Argentine Episcopal Conference expressed, “its deepest solidarity with the Syriac Maronite community and with its Bishop Juan Habib Chamieh, upon learning that the Syriac Maronite Cathedral of Saint Maron, in the Federal Capital, has been violated and the Holy Eucharist has been profaned.”
“We unite in prayer asking for atonement and reparation for so much felt damage to the community and in communion we implore God’s mercy before the moment of pain that these dear brothers of ours are going through.”
The Maronite Eparchy of Argentina bears the name Eparchy of Saint Charbel of Buenos Aires and its bishop is His Eminence Mor Juan Habib Chamieh of the Syriac Maronite Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Maron, a Syriac monk and hermit of the fourth-century. He is considered the founding church father of the Syriac Maronite Church of Antioch.
