Four media professionals punished in Algeria for broadcasting Fairuz song described as “glorifying Christianity”

CONSTANTINE, Algeria — News circulated on social media stated that four Algerian media professionals from Cirta FM were punished, two of whom were fired, for broadcasting a song by the Lebanese singer Fairuz. The song was described as “glorifying Christianity”.

Website Al-Shorouk reported that the Director-General of Algerian National Radio, Mohamed Baghali, terminated the employment of Director of Constantine Cirta FM, Murad Boukarzaza, and the presenter of the “Songs of the Beautiful Time” program. The director of the episode and the specialized technician were referred to the Disciplinary Council.

Informed sources said that the program, which was broadcast last Saturday, was the subject of an ongoing administrative investigation, during which the decision was made to punish those involved in the broadcast. Boukarzaza has worked for the radio station for 30 years and was made director last year.

Initial investigation led to the fact that the words of the song (Oh Jesus), carry the meanings of divinity and a request for mercy from Jesus Christ.
