DARBASIYAH, North and East Syria – Syriacs in the Gozarto (Jazira) Region annually on October 15, celebrate Mor Osyo patron saint day by visiting the church in the name of the saint in Darbasiyah, a town on the Syrian-Turkish border. Holy mass was celebrated by the Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Gozarto and Euphrates Maurice Amsih. Prayers for security and peace in Syria were said.

Darbasiyah is named after Mor Osyo (+377), its Syriac meaning being “The path of Osyo.” Darbasiyah is the Arabized version of the Syriac.

In an interview with Syriac satellite channel Suroyo TV, archbishop Maurice Amsih stated that; “On this blessed and holy day, we celebrate the patron saint day of Mor Osyo Hakimo [Saint Osyo the Righteous], the patron saint of this town.” The archbishop explained that the name of the saint in Syriac means “the righteous doctor” because God chose him to be the doctor of bodies and souls. “To love your family, relatives, friends, and even enemies is the advice of Mor Osyo Hakimo because he was a true disciple of the Lord Christ,” the archbishop added.

He concluded by congratulating everyone who bears the name of Osyo.
