GERMANY: Syriac Professor Fuat Shamun Oduncu (MD) honored with Federal Cross of Merit
MUNICH, Germany – Fuat Shamun Oduncu, a professor of medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and a specialist in hematology, oncology and palliative care, has received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his career-long work in cancer research, palliative medicine and medical ethics.
German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will present Oduncu the Federal Cross of Merit. Oduncu was nominated by the Prime Minister of Bavaria Markus Söder from whom he received the news in writing.
Fuat Shamun Oduncu (51) was born in Hapses, Tur Abdin, and emigrated at the age of four to Bavaria in southern Germany. He studied medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU). He also earned a master’s degree in philosophy from the Jesuit’s University of Philosophy in Munich. Fuat Shamun Oduncu is professor of medicine at his alma mater and chief physician at the Helios Clinic Munich West since 2019. Before his current position, he headed the department of oncology at LMU’s city campus.
Fuat Shamun Oduncu established an international network association for Syriac doctors.
